We are back home -- actually have been for a few hours, but now is the first minute I have had to update :)
Tim's surgery overall went very well. This is my understanding of what the situation is:
The doctor said that when he opened Tim's arm (along the outside of the bicep in between the muscles and down into the flexion tissue of the elbow that he saw both pieces of the tendon there. That was great because it alleviated the need to cut down the inside of his forearm to fish for the other part of the tendon which is what normally happens and is what we were expecting. He also said that he had an interesting repair because the tendon had not completely sheered off of its course. 20% of the tendon remained attached. This made the Dr. have to perform the repair a little differently than what is typical. They left the 20% (obviously). Dr. drilled three holes in the radius, inserted a plug (suture anchor maybe?) made of sugar (isn't that interesting???) Then the tendon was sutured back down to the radial tuberosity with those plugs. As the body heals and sends down fibrous roots into the bone again the plugs will be absorbed back into the body.
Dr. said that this will not aid in his recovery. The tendon still had to be repaired and 80% of it was detached. However, it was encouraging to me.
Tim is in a hard cast and will remain in that for four weeks. Following that it is the hinged cast for 6-8 weeks. No heavy lifting or regular (physical type) work with his arm for six months.
They did need to put Timmer out under general anesthesia because of the surgery and where the medication needed to be. The anesthesiologist said, we would like him to stay breathing (Ya' think??? LOL!) Tim has a really hard time with general and despite the precautions they used with three or four types of anti-nausea medications (two of those before he even had anesthesia)he still had heaves and severe nausea.
We were able to come home about 2 pm and Timmer slept for about 3-1/2 hours. After he woke up he ate a little soup and a sandwich. He perked up for about an hour or an hour and a half and then started feeling yucky again. He has been sleeping on and off since then.
Thank you for your prayers for us. I will keep you apprised of his progress here.
