Thank you so much for your prayers for our family today and Timmer specifically. His surgery was moved to 9:30 in the morning which worked wonderfully. We had to arrive an hour early; we still didn't get home until 4 pm. I am so glad that it was earlier. I can't imagine what time we would have been home if it had been at 3 as originally anticipated. The anesthesiologist gave Tim a spinal and some sedation rather than put him completely under general anesthesia which helped Tim's recovery a lot and made it SO much easier on his stomach.
Dr. Heetderks did a FABULOUS job on the meniscectomy. Unfortunately, the tear was much larger than the MRI originally showed. He had a medial (inside of the leg) tear but when he scoped it today it had progressed to a full bucket handle tear (named this because it actually looks like the handle on a bucket). The bucket handle had folded over and was wedged up against/in between the femur and tibia which causes a significant amount of pain. The remaining meniscus had numerous fissures in it which Dr. cleaned up remarkably. Tim still lost about 40% of his left meniscus. The doctor saw some arthritis beginning in the knee and so he is scheduling Tim for a series of lubricant injections which will hopefully postpone any further damage for a while. Tim would like to have them in both knees; we'll see if the doctor will accommodate him.
Dr. Heetderks came out and gave me the full scoop of information and showed me full color pictures of the scope which was fascinating. I saw clear color photos of the subpatella pocket, the femur head, the tibia head, his ligaments, and the meniscus from several different sides. It really was amazing. He even gave us copies!!
Tim is up and moving around some but Dr. wants him home and resting for a minimum of a week. I was amazed again at Tim's strength and endurance. He so rarely complains or grumbles. He had to have hurt so badly. I am glad that he got it remedied!!!
He is sleeping now. Thank you so much for your prayers. I can't tell you how much we appreciated them!
