Tim took me on a date last night -- we attended (get this!) the Frozen Frontier Ball. A group called Montana History Live put on a period dance in Whitehall on Saturday night. About 85% of those in attendance (not Tim and I this time) were fully attired in hoop skirts, long full dresses, pantaloons -- THE WORKS!!!
Many of the dances they did were the same as the ones we have been doing for ConfiDance or variations of the same dance. I asked a MILLION questions of organizers and attendees alike to try and see where we could improve. I learned a few new dances, one of which I had been trying to learn from instructions/diagrams with little success, so it was marvelous to see it in action. Another was a dance called "Tag" which I had never heard of before and amazingly enough neither had their caller. A group of the living history group learned it from a DVD and taught it to the group -- it was truly a beautiful, very elegant dance.
The event boasted LOTS of food which was all very tasty and one of the tables sported three pork heads (I kid you not.) complete with fruit stuffed in the open mouths.
I realize that this was very period appropriate eating but I could not go there, something about staring at eyes, teeth, and snout that was just quite unappealing to me. One of the organizers encouraged me to try it and assured me that the "jowls were the best part of the face". I would like to report that I overcame my aversion and courageously tried this delicacy finding it extremely palatable..............
Sorry, still couldn't get past the eyes, teeth, and snout. No exciting victory for me to report on that daring adventure :)
The evening was lovely however and the drive down (about an hour and a half each way) was precious time with my husband in relative quiet. I love driving time -- so much talking and sharing together is there.
I came away inspired to do a better job with our ConfiDance events and to look ahead with big dreams of learning new dances, growing as a caller/organizer, and having several period attire events each year. It gave the dance such a different atmosphere than our normal attire.
TOOOO - TOOOO FABULOUS!!!!
